Bio

Nature and photography - the beginning

Growing up in the Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland, fostered an early interest in nature and its intrinsic beauty. This interest led to undergraduate study in environmental science, followed by postgraduate research specialising in soil science. Alongside an ongoing photographic practice, a professional career in environmental science continues in the role of Head of Technical Services within the Environmental & Biochemical Sciences Department at the James Hutton Institute.

Nature photographer - practice

Icarus Owen is a nature photographer specialising in black and white photography. Personal photographic projects focus on specific areas, species, or techniques, supporting a sustained and methodical approach to each subject.

The work encompasses landscape and wildlife photography, with a particular emphasis on the environment of Scotland. Current projects focus on monochrome seascapes of north-east Scotland and mountain landscapes. Wildlife photography is often undertaken from a purpose-built hide to minimise disturbance.
